Welcome to our site and to my Blog ~~~ Angel Wings and Other Things.
The inspiration for The Special Angel Project started long ago when my daughter Kelly was a teenager. We had many things we disagreed on. As a mother, I had many sleepless nights wondering where I was going wrong. I definitely had a hard time getting her to listen to me. It is a proven fact that teens don’t listen to lectures and have a very short attention span if one attempts to talk with them about why they should change certain habits. Teens are also more apt to listen to their peers at a certain age than to their parents. The need to be accepted by their peers and to be part of “the group” is sometimes very powerful.
Many parents are unaware of just how powerful this peer pressure can be. But there is one thing all teens will listen to and that is music, the universal language. If used in the right way, music can provide a non-threatening and positive environment for learning. Music is what brought my daughter and I together. I was writing songs and asking for her input and many times she would suggest a different way to approach the song. Soon we started singing together more and arguing less.
One thing Kelly said to me years later was that she finally figured out that her Dad and I were not going to give up on her during those rebellious teen years. The Power of Love prevailed. Now, many years later, Kelly is a mother herself and the circle continues. As a busy Mom of twin boys and a teenage daughter, Kelly can’t always join the group now as we work with various agencies but when she does it makes me very happy.
Working over many years with teens at runaway shelters, probation camps, detox programs , camps and more has taught me more about the power of love. There are many agencies that do powerful work helping teens and families in crisis. We have seen miracles happen over time for kids facing overwhelming obstacles in their life. Love comes from those giving the actual care, education, shelter and all things needed by so many. It can also come from those who support those organizations doing the important work of rebuilding lives. Special Angel works collaboratively with selected agencies and it has been said that our unique approach helps these teens open up and become more receptive to therapy. We are proud to have worked with these agencies and play a part in helping troubled teens grow in confidence and hope for a better life.
Kelly and I have shared our story and what we have learned over the years from our work with struggling teens using music to start discussion about real life issues. It has been an amazing journey and we still love singing together. Here is a little sample from a Backyard Rehearsal of a song we wrote together with Howie Anderson.
